Do not wait for a job posting. Contact an
employer and let them know you are interested.
Be persistent. Even if you were
already rejected, send another letter at a later date.
True story – “three times a charm”:
A candidate sent their resume during law school and
a year after graduation to the fifth largest firm
in one of the largest cities in the country. The candidate
was rejected both times. Then, after working a year,
they again sent their resume. The candidate got an
interview and was hired. Ironically, the second rejection
letter came from the same person who hired them!
Pinpoint employers that you are
interested in. Find out if anyone at the organization
went to your law or undergraduate school. Send your
resume to that person.
Go to the website of the organization
of interest. Find out if they are hiring. Some organizations
only list jobs on their website.
Do not wait until you are unhappy to look for a
new position. Always keep your ears and eyes
open for good opportunities.
Attend legal bar and non-bar related networking
events. People love to see others attend events. Do
not be shy about telling people that you are looking.
However, do not make this the centerpiece of the conversation.
Work it in properly.
Finally, view the job search as fun.
It can bring change, which can be exciting, challenging
and very rewarding.
