Advice for Recent Grads

Question from a Legal Candidate: What do top employers look for?

We interviewed an Associate General Counsel from a Fortune 500 company on what he looks for in a job applicant. Having reviewed hundreds of resumes from new grads, he said he looks for “someone who is bright, eager, and wants to work.” He also noted that many resumes from recent grads look alike, and he looks for a “spark,” a resume that stands out from the crowd. He also noted that if a position requires no previous experience, he is more likely to take a chance on a candidate. Finally, he acknowledged that grades do impact his decision, but when someone is a couple years out, experience is more important.

Several lessons may be gleaned from this interview. To start, your resume needs to have a spark – those things on your resume, other than your grades, that set you apart from other candidates. Therefore, irrespective of class rank, include accomplishments and other matters that demonstrate your unique talents. Next, at every opportunity, show employers that you are bright, eager and want to work. People love the energy and eagerness that a new grad brings to the job – demonstrate that energy and eagerness. Finally, realize that many employers will give you a chance. This can be good motivation to get the job you want. Finally, when starting your practice focus on gaining excellent experience.

Question from a Legal Candidate: Will grades control my legal future?

Everyone tells new grads that grades, particularly from first year, and the name of your law school are the most significant factors in getting a legal job. While this might be true, it does not tell the whole story. Top grades no longer guarantee job offers. The market has opened up, due in part to increased job mobility. Employers have become comfortable with varying backgrounds; consequently, great opportunities await all job seekers. In the long run, getting the exact job you want at the place you want will occur with drive, determination, and top-notch legal experience.
